A Constitutional Monarchy is different from your average monarch because it is limited to the constitutions, where in a traditional monarchy the leaders have absolute power. The monarch is hereditary, which means that the citizens do not elect who their leader is.
Brunei has a Sultan and a Prime Minister (Hassanal Bolkiah). A sultan is a monarch that has absolute authority and is the ruler of an Islamic state. The sultan is of royal status. The family lineage of the current Sultan has ruled over six centuries.
The sultan is both head of government and chief of state.
